At the same time, the Lao website Vientianetimeslao.la also reported on April 5 that former General Secretary and President of Laos Choummaly Sayasone was safe in the boat capsize at 9:00 a.m. on April 4 at Nam Ngum Hydropower Reservoir, Thulakhom District, Vientiane Province. However, his wife, Ms. Keosaichay Sayasone, his son, Vidong Sayasone, along with a number of children and relatives, died.
According to the Vientiane Times, when the accident happened, the ill-fated tourist boat was carrying 39 passengers leaving a hotel in the Densavan area, on Nam Ngum Lake. The boat was about 40 meters from the dock when the accident happened.
Regarding the accident, the Lao News Agency (KPL) quoted Vientiane Governor Khamphanh Sitthidampha as saying that the accident occurred due to strong winds that capsized the boat. After the accident, the government and relevant agencies responded quickly and rescued 31 people out of 39 passengers on board.
