Propagating pansies from seeds indoors is relatively easy. Begin with a high-quality seed starting mix.
Fill the plant trays with growing medium. Then, surface-sow the pansy seeds in the tray and ensure that the seeds come into good contact with the soil. Place the tray in a black plastic bag that does not let light through.
Position the tray in a cool place and check for signs of growth every other day. Ensure that the soil remains moist throughout the germination process. Once the seeds have germinated, move them to a spot with plenty of light until it’s time to transplant them into the garden.
Keep in mind that the hardy nature of pansies allows for transplantation in the spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Pansies sown in autumn can be transplanted as soon as temperatures start to cool in the fall.
For those without the space or necessary supplies to start seeds indoors, the Winter Seeding Method can be employed. This method uses recycled containers, such as milk jugs, to act as ‘mini-greenhouses.’ Surface sow pansy seeds in these containers and place them outside. When the time is right, pansy seeds will germinate and begin to grow. Seedlings can be transplanted into the garden as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring.
