A Court Of Thorns And Roses TV Series Has Officially Been Cancelled

A Court of Thorns and Roses, widely known as ACOTAR, is a beloved romantasy book series that fans have long dreamed of seeing on screen—whether as a movie or a TV show.

While dedicated readers were aware that a TV adaptation was in the works at Hulu, updates on its progress have been scarce. Now, there’s finally news—but unfortunately, it’s not the kind fans were hoping for.

The TV series adaptation of A Court of Thorns and Roses has officially been cancelled.

The project, originally in development since March 2021, is no longer moving forward at the streaming platform. However, this might not be the end of the road—once the rights to her books return to her, author Sarah J. Maas will be free to explore new possibilities for bringing her beloved series to the screen.

The TV adaptation of ACOTAR was first announced in March 2021, with author Sarah J. Maas teaming up with Outlander creator Ronald D. Moore to develop the series for Hulu.

The project set out to bring the vibrant world of Prythian and its intricate characters to the screen, sparking major anticipation among the book’s devoted fans.

Although the project was met with excitement at first, updates on its development remained limited.

In July 2024, Ronald D. Moore announced that he was no longer attached to the series, having left Disney and returned to Sony, which cast doubt over the show’s future.

Then, in February 2025, Hulu officially confirmed that the ACOTAR adaptation would not move forward. The decision came after extended development delays, worsened by the industry-wide strikes of 2023 that impacted many scripted shows.

Disney’s 20th Television still holds the adaptation rights until late summer 2025. Once those rights expire, author Sarah J. Maas will be free to pursue new opportunities to bring her bestselling series to the screen.

Could an ACOTAR TV Series Still Happen in the Future?

There’s no doubt that A Court of Thorns and Roses has the potential to become one of the greatest book-to-screen adaptations ever—if done right. The key will be in how faithfully the story is translated for television.

And yes, there’s still a strong chance that the ACOTAR series could find new life! Once the current rights expire in late summer 2025, author Sarah J. Maas will be free to pitch the series to other studios or streaming platforms.

With book adaptations becoming more popular than ever—like Michael B. Jordan’s production company recently acquiring Fourth Wing—the future of ACOTAR looks promising. Excitement grew even more when Maas was seen with actress Margot Robbie, sparking speculation that Robbie, a known fan of the series, could be involved in a future adaptation through her own production company.

While nothing is confirmed just yet, fans remain hopeful. For now, it’s a waiting game—but there’s every reason to believe that Maas will eventually bring Feyre, Rhysand, and the world of Prythian to the screen in a way that stays true to the beloved books.
