Yellowstone continues with Beth and Rip spinoff as ‘disappointing’ season 5 comes to a close

While the final episode of the flagship Yellowstone series has yet to air, Paramount Network is already preparing another spinoff.

Taylor Sheridan’s popular and sometimes controversial Western drama resumed its fifth season last month after a two-year hiatus and the departure of lead star Kevin Costner.

With just one episode left, fans have been left wondering how the Dutton story will end or whether it will continue at all.

However, Deadline has now reported that Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser have signed deals to reprise their roles as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler in a spinoff series.

Unlike previous Yellowstone spinoffs, which were prequels set in the late 19th or early 20th century, the new series will continue the main story in the present day, according to the report. American Mirror.

Showrunner Sheridan is reportedly working on the series, which is expected to feature other key characters from the original show. According to Deadline, MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios were in talks with Reilly and Hauser for months before reaching a deal for their return.

This direct connection to the original series means that this will be the first spinoff to carry the Yellowstone title, unlike the upcoming sequel series The Madison starring Michelle Pfeiffer, which is set to air in 2025.

However, Deadline also said that this will be an entirely new series and not Yellowstone season six.

The reports come just days before Paramount premieres the much-anticipated series finale this Sunday (December 15).

While it has retained a loyal fan base even after losing its star actor and enduring a two-year hiatus, it remains to be seen whether the focus on the characters of Rip and Beth can match the success of previous Costner installments.

Fans have been vocal in their criticism of recent episodes, with one Reddit user lamenting: “This entire season has been a complete disappointment compared to the previous ones.

“I love how they’ve been playing it off for months that losing Kevin Costner isn’t a big deal, but the whole show is still about him… just… without him!…

“The writing is lazy, nothing really happens. It’s been four episodes and there’s nothing you can point to and say ‘wow, that was well thought out’ or even a good scene.”

Allegations have also been leveled at series creator Sheridan for allegedly indulging his own vanity on the show, particularly after casting Bella Hadid as his character Travis’ girlfriend.

Some, however, defended the choice, citing Hadid’s genuine horsemanship and her connection to the cowboy lifestyle through her partner Adan Banuelos, a prominent member of the NCHA Riders Hall of Fame who also stars in the series.

Screen Time at Reach has reached out to Paramount for comment.

Yellowstone season 5, part 2 continues Sunday on Paramount and next Monday on Paramount+.
